Dharma Study Course

Karma and Rebirth – Some Problems with Deciding there is no Rebirth

The doctrine of Karma and Rebirth is central to the Buddha’s teaching yet we as westerners often find it difficult to either accept rebirth or to embrace it and consequently many of us either reject it or remain undecided in relation to it.

Vessantara sought to address this issue a few years ago by writing three papers on the subject. His stated purpose was not simply to revisit the arguments for and against rebirth but rather to “look at how much of traditional Buddhism falls away or becomes problematic, and how different the Buddhist life becomes, [if you remain doubtful about or] once you decide there is no rebirth.”

On this short 4-week course, we will study Vessantara’s papers and explore the significant implications that our views in relation to karma and rebirth have for our comprehension of the Buddha’s teachings and for our practice of the dharma.

Suitable for: Regulars, Mitras, Order Members.
