Saturday Daytime Dharma Study Course

Dependent Arising and Emptiness

Whatever is of a nature to arise, all that is of the nature to cease.

The Buddha’s primary teaching is that of dependent arising (paṭicca-samuppāda) by which he sought to equip beings with the wisdom whereby they could overcome greed, hatred and delusion thereby breaking the cycle of conditions, which lead to suffering both in this and subsequent lives.

On this 8-week course we will be exploring this teaching in depth. We will consider it in relation to the 12 nidanas, the 4 noble truths, the 5 aggregates and the 6 senses. We will be looking at the mutual dependency of conditions, for example, that the sense of self depends upon clinging and that clinging depends upon the sense of self etc. And we will be seeking to fathom what he meant when the Buddha taught about the realisation of the cessation of all conditions (i.e. Nibbana).

This course is suitable for Mitras and Order Members.
